תקציר העבודה:

The Monkey King is one of the most famous Chinese literary heroes and a timeless cultural phenomenon that crosses Chinese national borders.

In this presentation, I first trace the very emergence of the legend of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) and locate its historical origins in China’s Song dynasty (960–1279). I then explain how Sun Wukong, the protagonist of the famous 16th-century Chinese classical novel Journey to the West, has since inspired numerous books, novels, movies, television programs, video games, comics, as well as stage plays. By investigating several elements inherent in such inexhaustible interest in Sun Wukong, my presentation reveals him as a cultural agent that embodies the struggle of the "other" by resisting hierarchy and social conventions, as well as a symbol of redemption and growth.
