שם העבודה: “Some Kind of Strange Bird”: An Analysis of Mo Yan’s “Soaring”

תקציר העבודה:

Written in the 1990s by the Noble Prize-winning author, Mo Yan, “Soaring” is a short story in the long line of Chinese literary works dealing with arranged marriage. My essay analyzes its different aspects. First I point out that “Soaring” represents Mo Yan’s work at its best: featuring his signature blend of hallucinatory realism, evocative imagery, dark humor, and sharp socio-cultural satire. Secondly, I discuss its content in the context of Chinese “root-searching” literary movement that was prominent in the 1980s and that called for a “reinvention” of Chinese culture while retaining its essence. Finally, I examine how Mo Yan utilizes the short story’s colorful cast of characters to convey a critical message about women’s position in the Chinese society. “Soaring” exposes the archaic, patriarchal customs of the Chinese society that objectify and commodify women, rendering them hopelessly powerless. This point is ever more relevant in the age of global #MeToo movement. I conclude by suggesting that an individual revolutionary can only defy societal restraints so much, and that the real change requires a “united front” and a collective effort --- even if the first step often demands bitter, costly sacrifices.
