תקציר

The second verse of the Filipino national anthem “Chosen land” (Lupang Hinirang), asserts the importance of three main elements that were explored in my essay: religion, land, and struggle. These elements become connected and reinforced through various collective identities. While not unique to the Philippines, the connection between identity and conflict can be examined through the country’s historical and modern struggles. I believe that the understanding and untangling of the various elements in this complex connection can bring great progress towards a less violent world. For this reason, I explored the subject of this work. My main interest in this essay was to explore how identity leads to struggle and continues to incite conflict in the Philippines. My claim was that the conflict in modern-day Philippines is maintained and fueled by a clash of collective identities that leads to resistance and struggle.
