Undergraduate Studies

The Multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program offers basic educational infrastructure aiming to expands the horizons of knowledge, fit to the undergraduate student. The three years' degree studies are divided into various aspects of knowledge, including varied humanistic wisdom education (Humanities, Social Sciences and comparative theology Studies). The multidisciplinary studies ensure a broad intellectual education, as well as motivate abstract thinking abilities through planting seeds to innovative critical thinking, literary analytical and synthesis skills, and of course, encouraging ingenuity and creativity. Knowing the value of these studies in 21st century, the multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program defines its goals, based on the following assumptions:

• The Multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program emphasis on courses with pragmatic added value to the student.

• The Multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program aim to place the graduate at the highest possible starting point in the "real world."

• The Multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program can serve as a platform for advanced studies and future research specialization channels.

 

Within the framework of the track selected, students are requested to choose from the following optional clusters*:

  • Asian Studies: China, Japan, India, Korea, Southeast Asia
  • Israeli Studies: Israeli Literature, Jewish Literature, Philosophy, Biblical studies, Political science, History, Theology and Folklore wisdom**
  • Culture and Heritage: English Literature, Comparative Literature, Hebrew Literature, General History, Arabic, French Culture, Classical Studies, Asian Studies.
  • Art and Thought: Jewish Art, Philosophy, Bible Studies, Jewish Thought
  • Practical Studies: Music therapy, Information Studies (additional programs will be added with the approval of the Council for Higher Education in Israel)
  • Latin, Ancient Greek, French, Spanish, Ladino, Turkish, Yiddish, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean (subject to change)
  • Personal track: A personalized program under the guidance of an academic advisor

* Academic clusters=eight credits

** Ulpan (for non-Hebrew speakers)- Hebrew language studies are available on campus. (Not included in the academic credits; extra cost)

 

The Multidisciplinary Humanities B.A. Program consists of four possible tracks:

• extended major   •standard major   •structured double major •unstructured double major

Students are requested to choose one of these tracks, which are broken down as follows:

The average total requirement for a B.A. degree at Bar Ilan University is 64 credits (based on lecture hours per year)

The Extended Major totals 46 credits, which include:

40 credits – studies encompassing 3-5 topical academic concentrations from the list of available units*

6 credits – seminars

 

The Standard Major program totals 30 credits, which include:

24 credits – studies encompassing 3 topical academic concentrations from the list of available units

4 credits – seminars (available beginning in the second year)

2 credits – elective course

 

The Unstructured Double Major totals 27 credits per program (27+27), which in the Multidisciplinary program include:

23 credits – studies encompassing 3 topical academic concentrations from the list of available units

4 credits – two seminars

 

The Double Major totals 25 credits per program (25+25), which in the Multidisciplinary program include (the number of the credit courses might change according to the agreements between the departments) :

21 credits – studies encompassing 3 topical scholarly concentrations from the list of available units

4 credits – two seminars

* Students may take 2 clusters or more from within the same unit with the approval of the program advisor. For example, a study track may be reinforced across Israeli Studies and a choice of language

Note: In order to earn a degree, students must fulfill the educational requirements for 10 credits in general Jewish studies and 8 general enrichment courses (for non Jewish students, 18 general enrichment credits) in accordance with university standards, which are updated from time to time.

Prior studies at other departments in the university or at other institutions of higher education that are recognized by the Council for Higher Education in Israel will be accepted as study units only with the approval of the Office of Student Status.

The Multidisciplinary B. A. Program of the Humanities offers rich variety of selective courses. Furthermore, students are permitted to incorporate additional courses from the university catalogue, which appears in the “General Courses” category, with the approval of the academic advisor.

The academic and professional administrative staff will assist in assembling a suitable curriculum for every student, offering counsel regarding course selection, and will be attuned to any difficulty that might arise throughout the course of the academic year and the degree program as a whole.

Likewise, the multidisciplinary team will assist as well, providing guidance and direction regarding postgraduate studies after graduation.
